Operation Christmas Child: Spreading Joy One Shoebox at a Time
Operation Christmas Child: Spreading Joy One Shoebox at a Time
As the holiday season approaches, many of us look for ways to give back and share the joy of Christmas with those in need. One incredible way to do this is through Operation Christmas Child, a global initiative led by Samaritan’s Purse. This program has delivered over 209 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 170 countries since it started in 1993.
But what exactly is Operation Christmas Child, and how can you be part of this life-changing movement? Let’s dive in.
What Is Operation Christmas Child?
At its core, Operation Christmas Child is a simple yet powerful act of kindness—packing shoeboxes with gifts that bring hope to children worldwide. Each box contains toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and a personal note to let the child know they are loved. The goal is to share the message of God’s love with needy children, especially those affected by poverty, war, natural disasters, and other hardships.
Once packed, these shoeboxes are collected, sorted, and sent to distribution centers before being shipped overseas. Local churches and community partners hand-deliver them to children, often in areas where resources are scarce.
How to Pack a Shoebox
Getting involved is easy! Here’s a step-by-step guide to packing your own shoebox:
- Choose a Shoebox
- You can use a standard-size shoebox or pick up an official Operation Christmas Child shoebox from a local drop-off location or church.
- Select a Gender and Age Group
- Choose whether your box will go to a boy or girl, and select an age range: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 years old.
- Fill It With Gifts
- Toys: Stuffed animals, dolls, cars, jump ropes, yo-yos, or soccer balls (with a pump).
- School Supplies: Pencils, crayons, notebooks, erasers, rulers, and sharpeners.
- Hygiene Items: Toothbrushes, soap, washcloths, and combs (no liquids or toothpaste).
- Accessories: Socks, hats, sunglasses, hair accessories, and small jewelry.
- Personal Note: A handwritten letter or photo makes the box even more special.
- Donate $10 for Shipping & Tracking
- You can pay online and get a tracking label to see where your shoebox is delivered.
- Drop It Off
- Find a local drop-off location during National Collection Week (mid-November) and send your shoebox on its way!
Why It Matters
For many children, a shoebox from Operation Christmas Child is the first gift they’ve ever received. It’s more than just toys—it’s a message of hope, showing them they are loved and not forgotten. Many shoeboxes also come with The Greatest Journey, a 12-lesson discipleship program that teaches children about Jesus Christ and faith.
